Email Exchange

Hi Laurie,
How's my favorite leader???
I haven't been attending WW lately:( I'm still a member though:)
Trying to get myself motivated to get back in there has been hard. The truth is, I'm feeling really discouraged lately, especially with so far to go.
In the past it's been so much easier. This time around I haven't taken the time to read the materials and use the tools.
I need to reeducate myself on the material and give it my best shot!
On the bright side, I just got back from a morning walk.
I'll be there on Thursday! Thanks for taking the time to check in with me. it means a lot.

Got this email just last week. My response:

Dear Member,
I recently realized that no one can lose fifty pounds- we only lose one pound at a time- sometimes a half pound at a time.
Yes, it is a long, long road- but if you don't get started with your journey, you'll likely end up with MORE pounds to lose. (And then you'll come back when you are 50 or 60 or 70 years old like so many of our Thursday members- why wait?) You need to get those habits under control once and for all....why not now?
And likely you will have to practice, practice, practice those habits forever. I'm STILL PRACTICING! I am still challenged. I still watch the scale everyday...but read my motto listed below!

Being overweight is hard
Losing weight is hard
Maintaining is (not quite as) hard....
Choose your hard!

Laurie- As a mere "commoner" (you "persuaded" me to join WW in the past but I'm not ready to get serious), I have some thoughts to share:

One of my personal best visualizations for doing anything hard is that old saw "Every journey begins with the first step" - it's so true. If you're paralyzed by fear of failure or by indecision, you cannot take that first step toward making ANY kind of commitment to do ANYTHING. But once you make that FIRST move, then you have chosen to go in a certain direction, which is hopefully FORWARD not backward. And whether you're running toward that goal or just moseying along but at least pointed in the "right" direction, it's all up to you.

Detours are tempting and they sometimes make the journey more interesting but often longer. Ultimately, it's all up to you, YOU get to choose - free will rocks! You can follow the WW rules and do all the prescribed things and follow all the tried-and-true steps and the weight will come off or ... like me ... resist food journalling, don't exercise regularly, maintain a diet full of sugar and fat and guess what? the pounds stay on and the belly gets bolder as one gets older. It's all a choice, it's all in your own hands (and mouth) ...

Even the reader who emailed you obviously recognizes that it's harder because she didn't follow the techniques and use the tools, so she shouldn't be surprised at being "stuck". I'm sure you'll welcome her back & probably arm her with new "ammunition" (information/education) to blast away at her new target goal.

I'm not saying losing weight is easy if you do all the right things, just that NOT doing the right things makes it harder ... and there IS a difference. (BTW, when I approach my 7th decade 8 years from now, chances are good that I'll be older before I'll be smarter - but I'm relishing the journey anyway :o)

You are so wise Terri, in all your comments.
That gal did come back to the meeting yesterday and she stayed for the Getting Started Session. She decided just to start all over from the beginning.
Many of our members need to join a few times till they take it off for good. It is a journey- that is for sure. We just keep plugging away, trying to take more steps forward than back.
